Summary is an art of prcis. It involves processes by which report, story, descriptions or text is reduced for precision without loosing the main points and without distorting the meaning and intended thought of the original version . The essential qualities of a good summary include: it must cover only the major points contained in the fuller version, it must not contain any idea that is not contained in the original version; the tone of the original version should be retained if it is a continuous writing and it must be written in such a way that whoever reads and understands it can be said to have a good knowledge of the contents of the original version. To be able to write a good summary, one must first engage in careful reading of the text or listen attentively to the message if it is recorded in audio or audio visual media. The main points are only to be included in the summary and must be brief as possible. Clarity of expression must be ensured in summary presentation. One is not copy the original passage or the text word- for- word rather one should use his / her own word without distorting the tone and idea of the original version. Knowledge of synonyms and good vocabulary skills are basic to effective summary writing.
